Protein could count down biological clock

The new discovery of a protein could help predict how much time is left on a woman’s biological clock.

Dr Sara Al-Musawi found that protein BMP15, which is produced by the ovary’s eggs, plays a key role in determining the number of ripened eggs released from the ovary at a time.

Each month, the ovary releases eggs for fertilisation. The more eggs a woman has, the greater the chance of her becoming pregnant.

The ability to target the specific protein could greatly change how women are treated for infertility issues.
