Proteins could help test those with Alzheimer’s disease

Biomarkers in the blood could help identify people with the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.

Researchers found that apolipoproteins, which transport cholesterol in the blood, appeared to be abnormal in people who had mild cognitive impairment.

A variant of the gene for one type of this protein has been linked to an increase in Alzheimer’s. Another variant has also been found in the brains of people suffering from the disease.

These proteins indicate a decline of mental function and may be targeted for treatment or preventative health-care methods.
