Workplace bullying and harassment has many guises. Sometimes, it is gendered. Sometimes it is racist. For women of colour, it’s often both.
Participants in our study — all highly skilled Black African professionals — reported feeling work was a site of constant surveillance and scrutiny, where their competence was often questioned.
Indigenous employees don’t just face racism and prejudice. There is also the “cultural weight” of working in largely non-Indigenous organisations.
Recent years have seen a rise in the number of businesses offering employees bias training. However, bias training is not a one-size-fits-all solution and unless tailored to specific contexts loses its value.
Scientific research can be a daunting career choice for women of colour, according to a recent survey which found they face a “barrage of brief, everyday racial slights” at work.
