Minorities and women under-represented in Hollywood

The proportion of female and minority artists in films and television ranges from 1/12th to one-half of their population percentage, according to a study by UCLA.

The research looked at the top 172 American-made movies from 2011 and more than 1000 television shows that aired during the 2011-12 season. The diversity of people involved was analysed in terms of artists behind and in front of the camera.

The study also found that greater diversity in film and television productions actually increases viewers, resulting in higher profits for studios and networks.
